What a nakshatra is
The Vedic zodiac is cut two ways. The familiar one gives you 12 rashis of 30 degrees each. The older one gives you 27 nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each.
Nakshatra means lunar mansion. It marks where the Moon sits against a fixed group of stars. The Moon crosses one nakshatra roughly every 24 hours, so a nakshatra pins your birth far more tightly than a rashi does.
Each nakshatra is split into four quarters called padas, of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. Your pada decides your navamsa position and the first syllable traditionally used to name you.
Your janma nakshatra is the nakshatra your Moon occupied when you were born. It's also called your birth star. South Indian families often know it by heart because it decides the birthday ritual, the marriage matching and the shraddha date.
Why the nakshatra lord decides the stone
Each nakshatra is owned by one of nine grahas. The sequence repeats three times across the 27 nakshatras, in a fixed order. Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Then it starts again.
That ownership does one very practical thing. It sets your Vimshottari dasha. The planet ruling your janma nakshatra is the lord of the mahadasha you were born into, and the Moon's exact degree inside that nakshatra decides how much of it was left at birth.
So your nakshatra lord does real work in your chart. It's the planet that was running your life the day you arrived, and it keeps coming back as a dasha lord throughout your life. The nakshatra stone strengthens that graha.
How to find your janma nakshatra
You need three pieces of information:
- Your date of birth
- Your time of birth, to the minute
- Your place of birth
From those, a chart calculates the Moon's sidereal longitude. That longitude lands inside one of the 27 nakshatra segments, and that's your birth star. The calculation needs the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the Indian standard, otherwise you can land in the wrong nakshatra entirely.
Two shortcuts that work. Check your janam kundli if your family had one made at birth. Or look at your given name, since traditional naming used the syllable assigned to your nakshatra pada.
If your birth time is uncertain by more than an hour, get the chart done properly before buying anything. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, which is a full nakshatra.

The nine groups, and what each stone does
Ketu group: Ashwini, Magha, Mula
Stone: Cat's Eye (Lehsunia). Silver or panchdhatu, little finger, Tuesday or Thursday morning.
Ketu works through sudden events and through skill you can't explain. Detachment comes with it. Born in these nakshatras, you pick things up fast and lose interest just as fast. Lehsunia steadies that, cuts the sense of drifting, and protects against sudden loss. It suits research, spiritual practice, medicine and anything occult.
Handle this stone carefully. Ketu is sharp, and the effects show up within days.
Venus group: Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
Stone: Diamond (Heera). Silver or platinum, middle or little finger, Friday morning.
Venus runs desire, comfort, art and partnership. These nakshatras come with strong creative pull and strong appetites. Diamond supports marriage and creative income, and it suits work in beauty, media, fashion or luxury. White sapphire is the upratna when the budget doesn't stretch.
Sun group: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
Stone: Ruby (Manik). Gold, ring finger, Sunday morning.
The Sun carries authority and a sharp sense of right and wrong. These nakshatras produce people who won't bend easily. Ruby supports leadership, government work, administration and recognition for work you've already done. It helps the father relationship and heart and bone health.
Moon group: Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
Stone: Natural Pearl (Moti). Silver, little finger, Monday morning.
The Moon runs your mind and your memory. These are the most comfortable nakshatras for the Moon, Rohini especially, since the Moon is exalted there. Pearl steadies mood swings and improves sleep. It supports the mother relationship too. The stone is gentle, which makes it safe to try.
Buy natural pearls only. The market is full of cultured pearls sold as natural.
Mars group: Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta
Stone: Red Coral (Moonga). Gold or copper, ring finger, Tuesday morning.
Mars gives drive and a short fuse. These nakshatras bring restlessness and a need to keep moving. Coral channels that into work. Arguments cool down. It suits surgery, defence, engineering, sport and real estate, and it helps low haemoglobin and weak stamina.
Rahu group: Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
Stone: Hessonite (Gomed). Silver or panchdhatu, middle finger, Saturday evening, about two hours before sunset.
Rahu brings ambition, foreign connections and a pull toward whatever is new. These nakshatras produce people who do well abroad or in unconventional fields. Gomed cuts confusion and helps when progress keeps stalling for no clear reason. It supports technology, aviation, import and export, and research.
Test this one before committing. Gomed either settles you quickly or unsettles you, and you'll know inside a week.
Jupiter group: Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada
Stone: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj). Gold, index finger, Thursday morning.
Jupiter carries knowledge and growth. These nakshatras come with a teaching instinct and a tendency to give more than you get back. Pukhraj supports teaching, law, finance, publishing and children. It's traditionally worn by unmarried women for timely marriage. Yellow topaz and citrine are the upratna options.
Saturn group: Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
Stone: Blue Sapphire (Neelam). Silver, steel or panchdhatu, middle finger, Saturday evening, about two hours before sunset.
Saturn runs patience and structure. These nakshatras produce people who get there late and stay there. Neelam speeds up delayed results and works faster than any other stone of the nine, sometimes within three days. It helps chronic joint pain and careers that stall.
Always test Neelam first. Keep it under your pillow for three nights and watch your sleep. The full trial method is on the gemstone side effects page.
Mercury group: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati
Stone: Emerald (Panna). Gold or silver, little finger, Wednesday morning.
Mercury runs speech and trade. These nakshatras bring quick intelligence and a habit of overthinking. Panna sharpens memory and steadies nerves. It supports teaching, writing, accounts, coding, trade and exams, and it also helps skin problems and stammering.
When the nakshatra stone beats the lagna stone
Most of the time your lagna decides the stone. There are four situations where the nakshatra stone is the better pick.
Your nakshatra lord is also running your mahadasha. This happens for everyone at least once. When the dasha lord and the nakshatra lord match, that graha is doing the heaviest lifting in your life, and its stone acts fast.
Your Moon is weak. If the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, sits in a dusthana, or gets hemmed in by malefics, your mental footing suffers, and strengthening the nakshatra lord steadies it.
Your lagna is uncertain. If your birth time is only approximate, the lagna may be wrong while the nakshatra is still reliable, because the Moon stays in one nakshatra for about a day. The nakshatra stone is the safer bet.
Your lagna stone is already being worn and you want a second one. The nakshatra lord's stone is the usual companion, as long as the two grahas aren't enemies.
Before you pair anything, check the never-combine table on the gemstones page, because some stones carry grahas that fight each other and cancel the benefit.
Weight and wearing method
Weight follows a thumb rule of one ratti per 10 kg of body weight, and the conversion with the per-stone minimums is on the gemstone ratti weight page.
The metal, the finger, the weekday, the purification and the beej mantra are all on the how to wear a gemstone page.
FAQ
What is janma nakshatra?
Janma nakshatra is the nakshatra your Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. It's also called your birth star. There are 27 of them, each covering 13 degrees 20 minutes of the zodiac, and the Moon crosses one roughly every day. The section above explains how to find yours.
Should I wear the nakshatra stone or the rashi stone?
Check your lagna first, since that usually gives the most accurate answer. Go with the nakshatra stone when your nakshatra lord is running your current mahadasha, when your Moon is weak, or when your birth time isn't reliable enough to trust the lagna.
Why do three different nakshatras share the same stone?
Because the nine planetary lords repeat three times across the 27 nakshatras. Ketu owns Ashwini, Magha and Mula, so all three carry Cat's Eye. The stone is the same. How that planet behaves depends on where it sits in your chart.
Does my nakshatra pada change the gemstone?
No. The pada affects your navamsa chart, your naming syllable and some matching rules. The nakshatra lord stays the same across all four padas, so the stone stays the same.
My nakshatra lord is Rahu or Ketu. Should I really wear Gomed or Lehsunia?
Only after checking the chart. Those two stones act fast and they don't suit everyone. A common approach is to wear the stone of a well-placed benefic, and to handle Rahu or Ketu through mantra and daan, the practice of giving.
Can I wear my nakshatra stone and my lagna stone at the same time?
Yes, when the two grahas are friendly. Ruby with Yellow Sapphire works. Blue Sapphire with Red Coral does not. Run both through the never-combine table on the gemstones page.
How soon will a nakshatra stone show results?
It depends on the stone. Blue Sapphire is the fastest acting of the nine and often shows within days. Pearl and Red Coral show within a few weeks. Emerald and Yellow Sapphire take one to three months. Ruby and Diamond build over several months. If your nakshatra lord is also your running mahadasha lord, expect it faster.
