Gemstones in Vedic Astrology

The nine Navratna gemstones of Vedic astrology

A gemstone in Vedic astrology is a remedy, and it carries the energy of one planet. Wear the ruby and you strengthen the Sun. Wear the blue sapphire and you strengthen Saturn. That much is simple.

The hard part is knowing which planet you should be strengthening. A planet that helps one person can damage another, because the same planet owns different houses in different charts. This page covers the full picture. The nine planets and their stones, who each stone suits, how much to wear, which finger, which day, and what happens when you get it wrong.

If you want the short answer for your own chart, the free gemstone reading at the end reads your birth chart and names the stone it supports.

What a gemstone actually does

Classical Vedic texts treat a gemstone as a receiver. Each planet has a quality and a colour frequency, and each gemstone holds the same frequency in solid form. When you wear a clean, untreated stone against your skin, it strengthens that planet's influence in your life.

That's the traditional principle, stated the way the tradition states it. A gemstone doesn't move a planet in your chart. The planet stays where it is. What changes is how strongly its results show up for you.

So ask which planet in your chart deserves more strength. That's the question a gemstone answers.

When a gemstone helps

A gemstone works in your favour when the planet it represents is a benefic for your lagna and is weak. Weak means debilitated, combust, badly aspected, or sitting in a difficult house. The stone gives that planet the support it's missing.

A gemstone also works well when the planet is a yogakaraka for your ascendant, meaning it rules both a kendra and a trikona. For Capricorn and Aquarius lagna, Venus is yogakaraka, so diamond is a strong choice. For Taurus and Libra lagna, Saturn is yogakaraka, which makes blue sapphire a strong choice even though most people fear that stone.

When a gemstone hurts

The same stone becomes a problem when the planet rules a dusthana for your ascendant, meaning the sixth, eighth or twelfth house. Strengthening a planet that owns your eighth house gives more power to the area of your life you least want amplified.

This is why the ruby that changed your friend's career can leave you restless and short-tempered. Your friend is probably a Leo or Sagittarius lagna. If you're Aquarius lagna, the Sun rules your seventh house, and a maraka doesn't need more fuel.

The nine planets and their gemstones

The nine primary gemstones are called Navratna. Each one belongs to one of the Navagraha.

Rahu and Ketu have no physical body and no ownership of any sign. Their gemstones work on the house they occupy and on the planets they sit with, which makes them harder to prescribe than the seven others.

Who should wear which stone

Here's the quick version by ascendant, built from house lordship. A planet is supportive when it rules your 1st, 5th or 9th house, and strongest when it rules a kendra and a trikona together, which makes it a yogakaraka. A planet that rules your 6th, 8th or 12th goes on the avoid list. A planet that rules your 2nd, 7th or 11th calls for caution, so test it before you commit to it.

Find your lagna and read your row. If you only know your rashi and not your lagna, these results will be wrong more often than right, and the gemstone reading at the bottom of this page will sort that out in under a minute.

A few planets rule a trikona and a dusthana at the same time, like Jupiter for Cancer lagna or Saturn for Gemini lagna. In those charts the house the planet actually sits in decides the call, so get the chart read before you buy.

Treat this table as a starting point. Whether a stone helps you also depends on where that planet sits and what aspects it receives. The dasha you're running decides how fast anything shows up. Two people with the same lagna can need different stones.

The full method, step by step, sits on the which gemstone should I wear page.

Gemstone by rashi

Rashi here means your Moon sign, which is what Vedic astrology uses when someone says "my rashi". The stone linked to your rashi is the stone of your rashi lord.

This is the version you'll find on most sites, and it's the weakest form of gemstone selection. It uses one factor out of six. A Capricorn rashi person running Jupiter mahadasha with Jupiter strong in the ninth house has little reason to put on a blue sapphire first.

Full detail, sign by sign, is on the gemstone by rashi page.

Gemstone by nakshatra

Your janma nakshatra is the lunar mansion your Moon occupied at birth. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, and that planet's stone is your nakshatra stone.

All 27 nakshatras are covered, three to each planet, running in the Vimshottari order. The nakshatra stone becomes the better pick in four situations:

  • Your nakshatra lord is running your mahadasha.
  • Your Moon is weak in the chart.
  • Your birth time is uncertain, so the lagna can't be trusted.
  • You already wear your lagna stone and want a second one.

Details for all 27 are on the gemstone by nakshatra page.

How much to wear

Weight is measured in ratti in Indian practice and in carat internationally. The conversion maths, the 10 kg thumb rule and a ratti to carat chart sit on the gemstone ratti weight page.

GemstoneUsual minimum weight
Ruby3 to 5 ratti
Pearl4 to 7 ratti
Red Coral6 to 9 ratti
Emerald3 to 6 ratti
Yellow Sapphire3 to 7 ratti
Diamond0.5 to 1.5 ratti
Blue Sapphire3 to 5 ratti
Hessonite6 to 9 ratti
Cat's Eye3 to 6 ratti

Going heavier doesn't give you a stronger result. An oversized stone pushes a planet past the level your chart can carry, which shows up as the same planet's negative traits. Stay inside the range.

Metal, finger and day

Each planet accepts a particular metal, and the metal conducts the stone's effect into the body. The full table of metal, finger and day for all nine stones, with the mantras and the exact timing, sits on the how to wear a gemstone page.

Two rules apply to every stone. Wear the ring on your right hand if you're right-handed. Keep the setting open at the back so the stone touches your skin, because a closed setting blocks the contact and the stone does very little.

How to wear it

Pick the right weekday in shukla paksha, soak the ring overnight in raw milk or Ganga jal, chant the planet's beej mantra 108 times, and put the ring on with your own hand. Most stones go on in the morning, within an hour or two of sunrise. Blue sapphire and hessonite go on in the evening on Saturday, about two hours before sunset.

The full ritual, with the Devanagari mantra text for each planet, is on the how to wear a gemstone page.

Which stones should never be worn together

Planets that are enemies in Vedic astrology have stones that fight each other on the hand. Wearing both cancels the benefit and often creates the problem you were trying to fix.

Safe pairs do exist. Pearl with ruby works for Cancer and Leo lagna. Emerald with diamond works for Taurus, Virgo, Libra and Capricorn. Blue sapphire with emerald suits Capricorn and Aquarius.

What goes wrong when you ignore this list, and how to tell a bad reaction from a coincidence, is covered on the gemstone side effects page.

Upratna, the substitute stones

A good quality blue sapphire or yellow sapphire runs into lakhs. Upratna are semi-precious stones that carry the same planetary energy at a lower intensity and a far lower price. You wear a heavier piece to make up for the lower strength.

RahuHessoniteOrange Zircon, Spessartite Garnet
KetuCat's EyeQuartz Cat's Eye

Red garnet serves the Sun. Some traditions also use other garnet varieties for Mars, so check which variety a seller is offering you before you pay.

Upratna are a sensible way to test a stone before you spend serious money. They're also the right choice for blue sapphire, which acts fast and can act badly. Start with amethyst for a few months and see what happens. The full list, with weights and who each substitute suits, is on the upratna substitute gemstones page.

Turquoise, firoza, sits slightly outside this system. Most Indian practitioners link it to Jupiter, and some link it to Venus. Treat it as a Jupiter substitute unless your astrologer says otherwise.

The 13 gemstones in detail

Nine Navratna and four widely used upratna. Each page covers the stone's planet, who it suits by ascendant, its benefits, its weight and ritual, its mantra, and the stones it must not touch.

Before you buy

Buy natural and untreated, because heat treatment and glass filling are standard in the trade and they kill the astrological value. Ask for a lab report from a recognised gemmological laboratory that names the stone as natural with no treatment, since a certificate printed by the seller carries no weight.

Weight, pricing by carat and the ratti conversion are covered on the gemstone ratti weight page. You can see our certified stones in the shop.

Run a trial first for the three fast-acting stones:

  • Blue sapphire
  • Hessonite
  • Cat's eye

Tie the stone in a cloth and keep it under your pillow or in your pocket for a week. Stop if your sleep breaks or if money goes out unexpectedly. The full trial method is on the gemstone side effects page.

How long before it works

Blue sapphire is the fastest acting stone of the nine and can act within days, which is exactly why it needs a trial. Pearl and red coral tend to show something within a few weeks. Yellow sapphire and emerald take one to three months. Ruby and diamond build slowly over several months.

A gemstone supports the planet through the period you're running. If you're in the mahadasha or antardasha of that planet, results come faster and stronger. If that planet's period is years away, the stone works quietly in the background. The gemstone for dasha page covers that timing in detail.

Keep it on continuously. A stone you wear on and off does nothing. Clean it with raw milk or plain water every few weeks, and re-energise it with the mantra on its planet's day.

Who should be careful with gemstones

Be careful if you don't know your lagna, or if you're considering blue sapphire without a trial, because those two mistakes cause most of the complaints we see.

Be careful too if you already wear more than two stones, or if your stone was prescribed years ago and your dasha has changed since. Read gemstone side effects before you add anything new.

FAQ

Which gemstone should I wear?

The one that strengthens a planet that's benefic for your lagna and currently weak. That depends on your ascendant and on how strong that planet sits in your chart. Your running dasha decides how fast the stone shows up. Your rashi alone can't tell you.

You can check here which gemstones are suitable for you.

Can I wear a gemstone without consulting an astrologer?

For the softer stones like pearl and moonstone, the risk is low. For blue sapphire, hessonite and cat's eye, get your chart checked. Those three cause the most complaints when worn blindly.

You can consult our Principal Astrologer if you have more questions about this.

Does a gemstone lose its power over time?

A natural stone keeps its properties. What fades is the energising, which is why the mantra is repeated on the planet's day. Replace a stone that cracks, since a cracked stone is treated as finished.

Can I wear my gemstone in a pendant instead of a ring?

Yes. The stone needs skin contact, and the finger rule exists because fingers have planetary associations. A pendant works when the ring setting is impractical, though a ring on the correct finger stays the stronger option.

Which gemstone is best for Rahu mahadasha?

Hessonite, gomed, is the stone for Rahu. Whether you should wear it during Rahu mahadasha depends on which house Rahu sits in. Rahu in the third, sixth or eleventh often gives good results on its own and needs no stone.

Are American diamond and synthetic stones acceptable?

No. Lab-grown and imitation stones have the chemical composition without the natural formation, and Vedic practice treats natural origin as the requirement.

Can two people share a gemstone?

No. A stone that's been worn carries the planetary imprint of its wearer. Buy your own, and avoid inherited stones unless they've been re-energised.

What happens if I wear the wrong gemstone?

The planet gets stronger, and so do its difficult results. A wrong ruby brings ego trouble and friction with authority. A wrong blue sapphire brings delay and loss. Take the stone off, and the effect fades over a few weeks.
